Mips is a company that specializes in helmet-based safety and brain protection and is a world-leader in this area. The founders of Mips have spent decades studying the relationship between brain injuries and helmet construction. Established in the world of science with over 20 years of research, the first Mips-equipped helmet was launched on the market in 2007. Up until 2021, Mips has sold more than 20 million Mips safety systems to more than 120 helmets brands across numerous disciplines such as:

The head office is in Stockholm as well as its unique testing facility. The components for the solution are manufactured in China to enable smoother processes with its customers. Today, in total around 50 employees work with sales, research and development, production and administration. 

Where it started:

Peter Halldin, a researcher at the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology, and Hans von Holst, a Neurosurgeon and professor emeritus, together developed a ground-breaking technology to improve the way helmets protect the head. Their goal was to achieve better protection against rotational motion transferred to the head, an area of research that received very little attention at the time. Several years of research, testing, and development led to innovation, and the Mips system was born.

How the technology works:

The Mips safety system features a low-friction layer inside the helmet that allows multi-directional movement of 10-15mm (0.5 inches) on certain angled impacts, intended to help reduce rotational force to the head. Mips safety system is easy to implement in both new and existing helmet models and is sold to the global helmet industry, which integrates Mips safety system in their helmet.

Why the technology is needed:

The brain is more sensitive to rotational motion than linear motion because it has shear properties similar to water or gel. When different parts of the brain move relative to each other as a result of rotational motion, the tissues can stretch, which can cause concussions or other brain injuries.

In summary, the difference between a helmet with and without a Mips safety system is that a Mips safety system allows the helmet to rotate 10-15mm (0.5 inches) relative to the head on angled impact. The rotational kinematics are meant to be reduced with the Mips system installed. The 10-15mm (0.5 inches) rotation creates a small but crucial relative motion designed to prevent concussion and brain damages.
